5QA Mario Galla / model & author

Who’d've thought? Remember when I posted something about the German male model Mario Galla in March? Well, he’s back on DiasOfDiaz with our 5QA series. For those of you who haven’t heard of Mario yet: he is one of the most talented and charismatic male models in the current fashion world – and he is not like the others. Some might have expected him to never walk a runway – or even wear bermudas. Mario is more than just another handsome guy. He is a symbol for all handicapped young people on the globe that beauty is to be defined by self-esteem, discipline and your own will and that you can do whatever you want to do – if you really want it. And since not only the latter is also a lesson for the non-handicapped, I am probably not the only one to be deeply impressed by his accomplishments: catwalk jobs for Hugo Boss and Michalsky, numerous amazing editorials (with and without his artificial leg showing) and, most recently, his own book “With one leg in the modeling business” (see below; so far available only in German – check Amazon and watch the trailer here).

DiasOfDiaz: How do people react when they realize that you’re not depressive but impressively, intelligently humorous?

Mario Galla: Actually, no one behaves in a special way towards me because I define myself though my personality, not through my handicap. After all, it’s a question of how you approach someone. When I approach people positively and give them the feeling that everything is cool, no one will get the idea that my situation would handicap me. And my situation doesn’t handicap me. ;-)

DiasOfDiaz: What is the one beauty item you could never do without – and why?

Mario Galla: My sunglasses because there are too many dazzlers in this business… ;-)

DiasOfDiaz: Tell us about the strangest or craziest thing you ever witnessed during a photo shoot or show?

Mario Galla: I suppose I’ve seen pretty much everything from intrusive, almost pestering hair and make-up artists to crying photographers whose photos had been deleted.

DiasOfDiaz: Name five people or places that truly inspire you…?

Mario Galla: My mother, Lars Amend (the co-author of Mario’s book – editor’s note), Oliver Rath, my homie Lais and Kendrick Lamar.

DiasOfDiaz: Imagine you could be a superhero… Who would you be and would you change his costume?

Mario Galla: I’d be Superman! And I would choose a more masculine and darker costume… More Batman’s style, haha. :-)

Apart from is modeling career, Mario currently goes to university and is very engaged in several charity projects including PETA and Netzdurchblick which is a project to teach young people the right use of the internet, to clarify cyber mobbing and its consequences and to give fresh (understandable) information about copyright, necessary apps and alike.

Photos from top to bottom: an unknown portrait, an editorial shoot for Tiempo Paris, on the catwalk for Michalsky, campaign for PETA Germany and another unknown portrait.
