Best of Fashion Week New York – Women’s Wear Part One

For the Best of Fashion Week Berlin I named my personal best of in alphabetical order. For New York, this is a bit too much for such a long event. So let’s start with the women’s wear that was presented so far in alphabetical order… ;-)

It was only in early 2010 the brand Kaelen was launched and now its Summer 2013 blew me away. Kaelen Haworth discovered her love of design at a young age watching her mother get dressed for special events. As a teenager, Kaelen became enamored with her mother’s use of color, texture and fabric to bing together ensembles that stepped outside the boundaries of anything she had seen before.

Monika Chiang debuted in the Fall of 2011. The designer sees her collection as a reflection of own signature style, the collection evokes modern glamour steeped in an elegant nonchalance. ”The Monika Chiang collection is not designed for a woman of a specific age or who lives in a particular place – it’s all about her attitude and spirit. She is a fashion-forward woman with a deep appreciation of other cultures,” Monika explains. “I design with her in mind. I want my collection to help empower women to dress with confidence and feel comfortable, without sacrificing style.”

Nicholas K is a New York based design company, founded in January of 2003 by siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz. Incorporating traditional quality and design with modern refinements and a downtown edge, Nicholas K offers items across the full women’s RTW product range as well as accessories and a menswear line that launched for Fall 2006. But for now – here’s to their Summer 2013 women’s wear!

Supima is America’s luxury cotton: founded in 1954, the Supima brand designates an elite variety of pima cotton grown only in California and the Southwestern U.S.. For this fifth Supima Design Competition, four of America’s top design schools were asked to select two finalists from among their graduating seniors. Each finalist was asked to create a capsule collection of women’s eveningwear gowns from premium Supima denims, knits, corduroys, twills, and shirting.

This year’s eight finalists: Yvonne Luong and Kyle Pearson from the Fashion Institute of Technology; Meredith Lyon and Kate Wilkoff from Pratt Institute; Abigail Glass and Jacqueline Siefert from the Rhode Island School of Design; and Eduardo Calvo and Natalia Yepes from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

And finally: The Art Institute of New York City. It is a leading institution for career preparation in graphic design, web design & interactive media, digital filmmaking, fashion design and interior design. Their show really makes me look forward to the fresh design inputs from the young and the talented.
